Liters of paint
Once young people reach their legal adult age and leave the SOS Children’s Villages, it’s crucial for them to be capable of supporting themselves. They have to decide what profession to pursue, what they want to devote themselves to, and what goals they will set in order to become independent. YouthCan! was created to help to fight youth unemployment and through the partnership in Russia, we aimed to provide career guidance and to develop practical skills to boost the employability of the young people.
Painter training and much more
AkzoNobel specialists organized a series of painting training and sales skills courses. Painting training included theoretical and practical lessons, and young people learned that there are numerous paint-related professions out there, and that – with knowledge of paint – they can aim to become a designer or even work as head of a construction team. During these training sessions AkzoNobel volunteers also shared valuable tips & tricks on how to develop specific sales techniques, as young adults may decide to pursue a career in sales.
Education and hard work turn dreams into reality
An additional aspect of the training was a series of workshops and interactive courses about defining and achieving personal goals to help make dreams come true. AkzoNobel professionals shared useful advice on how to find purpose in life and secure the future by getting a good education, as well as on how to identify the right profession and become a specialist in a chosen field. With the help of our volunteers, the young adults created a “wish map”, which will help them in further defining life and career plans.
The Time Capsule
As part of this interactive training, young adults wrote a letter to their future selves. In these handwritten personal letters, they stated everything they hope to achieve in the future – all their goals & dreams, followed by a detailed plan on how they plan to improve their lives by investing in their careers. All their letters were placed in a Dulux can, which (for this special occasion) was turned into a time capsule that is scheduled to be opened in ten years. We hope that in 2028 this training will prove to be another step that helped them in making all their dreams come true.
